February 2012

Dear Teaching Colleagues-

With the winter storm of 2012 a thing of the past, I am excited to get moving into spring time activities, as I am sure you are too!  Knowing that there is still at least one more month of wintry weather, I have decided to work extra hard at the things that need doing right now.

In OMTA, we have faced a few hard things in the past month, so have been busy at work – one adjudicator was unable to adjudicate due to medical reasons, so there have been a couple of changes – Judith Cohen will be our adjudicator on Monday, February 27 and Colleen Hunter will be our adjudicator Tuesday through Friday, February 28-March 2.  Del Parkinson will adjudicate all week.

The second difficulty does not even compare with the first in magnitude, as one of our much-loved members has lost her husband.  Rhonda Morse’s husband John passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 21.  We all mourn with her as we hear the news.  If you are able to attend a memorial service for him, his memorial service will be this Friday, Feb. 3rd at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Lacey at 3:00pm.  Rhonda would appreciate e-mail correspondence rather than phone calls at this difficult time.  Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with her as she makes her way through each day.

Our February OMTA calendar starts with the OMTA meeting on February 14.   We will meet at Yenney’s Music Store with socialization at 9:00, a business meeting at 9:30, and an educational program at 10:00.  Dr. Jane Dunham will be presenting a program on “How Your Hand Really Works” from a medical doctor / pianist’s perspective.

Our Adjudication schedule has been approved and will be available for teachers to pick up on Thursday, February 2 at Yenney’s.  Look for your name on a manila folder in the teacher’s box.  If you have any questions, contact Carol Crawford.

John van der Brook needs your student names and pieces by February 11 for the February 18th Sonatina Festival which will be held at Westwood Baptist Church.  There will be three or four recitals, depending on the number of students performing, and teachers will be notified when their students will perform by February 14.

Mary Jane Clarke is awaiting registrations for the February 26th Conference Recital Competition, so get those to her by the February 14 meeting.  Judith Cohen and Mary Ellen Calvelti will be our
Competition Judges.

On March 3 Brooke Beecher’s student and winner of the intermediate division at the concerto competition, Surabhi Mundada, will be performing her concerto at the Minnaert Center for the Arts with the Olympia Chamber Orcherstra. Her concerto is Giovanni Paisiello’s Concerto in F Major, Allegro Giusto.

The May Festival of Musicianship, will be Saturday, May 5, so start planning on who you will register for that.

Please contact me if you have any questions.  I hope to see you at our February meeting!
